QPIF Mango
Making mangoes even better
Mangoes are a vital part of the Queensland economy, with the industry valued at $80 million. Kensington Pride is the main variety of mango grown in Australia and accounts for more than 80% of total mango production.
Other varieties such as R2E2, Calypso, Honey Gold and Irwin are also grown but make up a much smaller portion of the total output. These varieties do however, all have different qualities desirable to the market.
QFAB has been working with the QPIF to investigate genetic factors that contribute to mango qualities such as:
- Smell
- Taste
- Shelf life
- Tree yield
Our team has been assisting the QPIF with bioinformatics analysis, data transformation, sequence annotation and data integration of the large Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) libraries generated during these experiments.
Using software solutions in conjunction with applied bioinformatics knowledge, QFAB has been able to provide researchers at QPIF with the tools and data analyses they require to help identify ways in which future mango crops can not only taste better, but be more efficient to grow and easier to transport.
